First Grade has been working on a Native American/Pilgrim unit during the month of November. As part of that unit the students have done many hands-on activities such as weaving, making clay pots and writing with quills and ink. One of the favorite activities is candle-making. Each student is given a candle wick tied to a pencil. Then they are invited to take turns and quickly dip that wick into melted wax. After about 15 minutes of dipping each student has a sizable candle to take home.
