First Grade has been working on a Native American/Pilgrim unit during the month of November. As part of that unit the students have done many hands-on activities such as weaving, making clay pots and writing with quills and ink. One of the favorite activities is candle-making. Each student is given a candle wick tied to a pencil. Then they are invited to take turns and quickly dip that wick into melted wax. After about 15 minutes of dipping each student has a sizable candle to take home.

This November AES Third Graders worked with the Harris Center and The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests to create a Salamander Population and Adaptation Research Collaboration Network (SPARCnet) Site at McCabe Forest. The SPARCnet site consists of two plots, each containing 50 wooden boards laid out in a 5x10 array. Each spring and fall students will visit the two plots three times to lift the wooden boards and collect data on the red-backed salamander populations. The data will be sent to scientists at Penn State University where they are tracking the impact of climate change and property use on the salamander populations. The red-backed salamander is the most abundant creature in our woodlands, and there for the population changes are a great indicator for scientists.

NEA-NH President, Megan Tuttle, and Manchester Monarchs Players came to Third Grade as part of the "Read Across New Hampshire with the Monarchs" program. After reading, the players answered questions and signed items for our classrooms! The players were impressed with our newest school value, GRIT. The Monarchs give out GRIT awards after each game - very similar to our EAGLES for showing GRIT.
Tickets are available for the Monarchs game on December 1st by going through this link: https://monarchs.spinzo.com/antrimpto
