On Friday, October 5th, Antrim Elementary 4th graders visited to Sturbridge Village. We had many dedicated family members there as chaperones to share in the historic fun. Some of the popular activities were seeing blacksmiths at work, interviewing the village attorney, and seeing animals at Freeman Farm. It was a beautiful day and students and their families had an awesome time exploring. Each 4th grade student will now choose an occupation to research and dress up as for our Colonial Fair which we will host in November. Third graders from Mrs. Hill and Mr. Morris’ classes hiked Pack Monadnock Thursday to participate in the annual Raptor Migration count. Students have been studying several things leading up to this trip including weather instruments to help predict good days for migration, adaptations that allow raptors to thrive in their environment, and identification of the three types of raptors we see most often in New Hampshire (buteos, accipitors, and falcons). After a two-hour hike that included lots of teamwork, a few moose tracks, and lots of runoff from the previous night’s thunderstorms, they made it to the top with smiles and a great sense of achievement! They were treated to a quick lesson about the work the New Hampshire Audubon and the Harris Center are doing at the Raptor Observatory after eating lunch and taking in the views. The students impressed the presenter with their knowledge of raptors! While at the observatory they were able to see several kettles of broad winged hawks, a few ravens, and a bald eagle! The Raptor Observatory is open seven days a week from September 1st through November 15th. You can find more information on the Harris Center website here: https://harriscenter.org/conservation-research/pack-monadnock-raptor-observatory/visiting-the-hawk-watch [post_title] => AES's 3rd grade and Annual Raptor Migration Count [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => aess-3rd-grade-and-annual-raptor-migration-count [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2018-09-28 14:26:14 [post_modified_gmt] => 2018-09-28 18:26:14 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://aes.convalsd.net/?p=1498 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [4] => WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 1493 [post_author] => 290 [post_date] => 2018-09-17 10:44:26 [post_date_gmt] => 2018-09-17 14:44:26 [post_content] =>

We had a warm and overcast first day back in the garden on September 13th. The students found the garden overflowing with plants. Jumping right into this season's theme of Field Investigation, students searched for evidence of Summer garden care. We devoured a fresh snack of ground cherries, basil, kale, and chives. We brought fully developed radish plants into the shade to inspire scientific drawings in the garden journals . Our student gardeners planted pea shoots and lettuces to grow in the approaching cooler weather. On the evening of September 13th, Antrim Elementary hosted its annual Open House. We were pleased to have such a large turnout from families and the community. Teachers eagerly shared what the students will be learning this year, and students proudly showed off their classrooms. Local organizations such as the Grapevine, End 68 Hours of Hunger, the Lion's Club, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Fresh Picks, and the PTO all had displays in the multi-purpose room to make connections and offer information. We also had fingerprinting services available for volunteers. This was the first event of many where AES students, families and community members will be able to make connections for the benefit of our students. On Friday, Antrim Elementary Eagles met their reading buddy for the year. Each class pairs up on Friday afternoons with a class from a different grade level. It's a great way to end our week and share an enjoyment for reading together. Students often pick out books especially to read with our buddies. For example, Mrs. Zawacki's 1st grade class chose Eric Carle books to read with Mr. MacLeod's 4th grade class during their first session together. Reading buddies is the highlight of many eagles' weeks!
